On mature trees, large showy white bracts surrounding small, red-anthered flowers flutter like birds in the slightest breeze, appearing from a distance like doves sitting among the branches! The pyramid shaped dove tree has heart-shaped, broad, deep green leaves arranged alternately and about 2 to 6 inches long, that are free of pest and disease troubles. Leaves take on fall color varying from warm pastels to warmer orange and red tones.
Dove tree first flowers in May lasting up to a month, with two bracts surrounding each flower; lower bracts are 3 inches wide and 6 inches long while the upper bracts are half that. Once fallen these bracts create a beautiful white carpet in your landscape. Native to china, an ancient species that although becoming more frequently cultivated, are categorized as endangered. Today, gardeners’ prize growing dove trees for the showy bracts, but the species has been around since the Paleocene, with fossils of its existence found in North America.
