ℹ Sweet Chestnut or Spanish Chestnut is a beautiful majestic tree that can grow up to 100 feet tall and live up to 700 years with a trunk that will get 6-7 feet in diameter. The most famous attribute this beautiful shade tree has is that it produces abundant amounts of delicious large sized nuts each year! One of the best ways to eat chestnuts is roasting them to bring out their buttery and sweet taste but they’re also typically pureed, ground into flour, boiled, candied, steamed, and grilled, among other types of preparation. It's flavour is reminiscent of the sweet potato. Sweet chestnut trees have dark green glossy leaves that turn a stunning canary yellow in the fall. In early summer 4-7 inch long, upright, greenish-white catkins bloom with the male flowers in the upper part and female flowers in the lower part which develop into shiny, red-brown fruits wrapped in a green, spiky case and in early fall nuts begin to ripen and drop. Although each sweet chestnut tree has male and female flowers, they produce better when more than one tree is planted to obtain fully formed nuts.
